Race Management Training & Roles

Our club racing is managed by members who volunteer as Race Officers and Race Team members. They carry out the essential task of providing interesting and varied courses for our club racers.

As a Club Race Officer, you are expected to volunteer for two Sunday duties a year and there are opportunities to volunteer for additional club or open meeting events as Race Officer or as an assistant race officer. There is a training programme for those interested in becoming a Club Race Officer and there is a pathway for those club race officers that are interested in progressing to the role of Regional Race Officer.

A typical Club Race Officer duty involves coordinating with the race team prior to the day. Discussing the weather and buoy positioning with the safety boat coxswain. Setting the racecourse and briefing sailors. Starting races with the assistance of the race team using various flag & sounds signals, and calling back any boats over the line. Finishing races, writing down sail numbers and times to form a set of results. After racing helping to pack away equipment and inputting the results into the computer ready to be published onto the website.

What you will need for the day:

  • A Buoyancy Aid. These can be hired from the club if needed.
  • It can get chilly during the winter months so lots of layers will be needed.
